GR0877 Problem 17

PROBLEM STATEMENT: This problem is still being typed.

SOLUTION: (A) Let a Gaussian surface be a cylinder of radius $r$ and length $L$. The axis of the cylinder coincides with the wire. According to Gauss’s law $2 \pi RLE = \lambda L/\epsilon_0$, from which $E = \frac{1}{2 \pi \epsilon_0} \frac{\lambda}{r}$. The answer can also be found by elimination of choices, since (A) is the only choice with correct units.
